Schools Cracking Down On teen Web Site MySpace
BOSTON -- Is it a virtual hangout for millions of American teenagers, like a sprawling electronic shopping plaza, or a magnet for sexual predators and pornographers?
MySpace.com is a bit of both, say Rhode Island education officials who have banned the fast-growing teen social networking Web site from 80 percent of their schools out of concern is was putting children at risk.
"There's a lot of personal information and things like that on MySpace.com -- a bit more than I'm comfortable with," said James Murphy, assistant director of technology for the public schools in Coventry, Rhode Island.
The Rhode Island Network for Educational Technology, a nonprofit that handles Internet networks for the state's 36 public school districts, said 80 percent of the schools had requested an Internet filter to screen out MySpace.com.
A blizzard of news headlines in national media have raised alarm with parents and school authorities -- from "Man arrested in MySpace.com teen-sex case" to "Sex predators are stalking MySpace; is your teenager a target?" and "Space Invaders."
School districts in Florida and several other states and private universities have also installed filters on their Internet networks that block the site, which media mogul Rupert Murdoch's News Corp bought for $580 million in July.
MySpace.com, which boasts 56 million members, allows teenagers and young adults to find friends and express themselves by posting profiles and blogs, or Web journals covering everything from their favorite singers to schoolwork and their sexual preferences and other intimate details.
In Connecticut, which borders Rhode Island, the state's attorney general, Richard Blumenthal, is investigating a number of sexual assaults with links to MySpace.
'EVERYBODY'S NIGHTMARE'
Authorities in Santa Cruz, California, arrested a 26-year-old in February for felony child molestation after he met a 14-year-old on MySpace. In other cases, MySpace.com has been used to threaten classmates.
"What could have been probably an innocent place for kids to meet has turned almost to be everybody's nightmare," said Monique Nelson, executive director of Web Wise Kids, a nonprofit Internet safety organization based in California.
"I'm glad to see Rhode Island taking a stand. It's unfortunate because I don't think the Web site was obviously originally designed to have things like this happen," she said.
Elliot Krieger, a spokesman for the Rhode Island Department if Education, said each school district can decide for itself whether to filter out MySpace.com or other web sites that have adult or inappropriate content for children.
The Rhode Island ban affects about 130,000 students while they are using computers at school. But students were always one step ahead and finding new ways to use the Internet or surfing sites like MySpace.com from home, Murphy said.
"There is no filtering service that is going to be foolproof," he said. "We try to keep on top of this and stay ahead but it's a challenge."
Pam Christman, director of technology programs and network services at the Rhode Island Network for Educational Technology, said about 40 percent of the state's schools had also sought bans on a long list of Web blogging sites.
MySpace has said that its users have to be at least 14 years old and are required to fill out an online form that includes their date of birth.

事例として、今年の2月にカリフォルニア州サンタクルーズで26歳の男が、14歳の少女への性的な犯罪の容疑で逮捕された。これはMySpace.comが出会いのきっかけであった。MySpace.comでは14歳以上でないと利用できないように生年月日を記入させていますが、どれだけの効果があるのかはまだ不明。

Doctors choose sex for hermaphrodite baby
Doctors face a very difficult dilemma – they have to decide which sex to choose for a newborn child.
The parents of the unusual baby are trying not to interfere in the doctors’ decision-making process. The young couple is just praying to God to help the experts on genetics make the right decision and not break the life of their long-awaited baby.
The family of Muscovites - Sergey and Olga - has been waiting for their baby for a long time. Sergey was very happy when the doctors told them that Olga was pregnant.
Olga, 20, had a very easy pregnancy. She was working as long as she could, and her colleagues would have her labour at the workplace.
The child’s sex was not actually important for the parents.
Olga even asked the doctors not to tell her the sex of her child.
“We wanted it to be a surprise. We wanted this child so much,” Olga says.
The child was born in time.
The young mother almost burst into tears when she heard the first cry of her child. However, Olga could not understand why doctors did not bring the baby to her. A few hours later the doctor came to Olga’s ward and tried to explain that her child was a hermaphrodite. The newborn child had both female and male traits.
“Doctors say the child is half a girl and half a boy at the same time. They also say that the child can successfully be formed either as a boy or as a girl,” Sergey says.
Five days after the labour, Olga checked out from the hospital, but her baby was put to the pathology department, Life.Ru reports.
Now experts are waiting for the results of the genetic examination.
“In this particular case only genetics can say for sure which type of development, male or female, the child’s organism is more prone to.
We are going to love our baby in any case,” Sergey says.
According to the experts, in this case the main thing is not to be mistaken with the genetic predisposition of the child's organism.
There is nothing difficult in the medical operation to form the child’s sex.
“There were cases when an androgynous child was brought up as a boy, but when he became a teenager, he started to feel like a girl,” doctors say.

Cows that burp less methane to be bred A cow that burps less is being bred by Canadian scientists in an attempt to reduce the greenhouse gases responsible for global warming.
Cows are responsible for nearly three-quarters of total methane emissions, with most of the gases coming from burps which are 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas.
Stephen Moore, a professor at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, is examining the genes responsible for methane produced from a cow's four stomachs in order to breed more efficient, environmentally friendly cows.
Mr Moore, professor of agricultural, food and nutritional science, has recently published a study in the Journal of Animal Science having completed primary tests to breed animals that produce 25 per cent less methane.
However, more work needs to be done before the long-term impact is known.
He said: "We are working on producing diagnostic markers for efficient animals. We are looking at the next generation of technologies that will enable us to determine the genetics of an animal through a blood test or testing some hairs that you might pluck from the animal."
Ways of having cows produce less methane is to grow them faster, thus lessening the period between them standing in a field and getting to market.
Mr Moore said cows could also be bred to better covert food into muscle, so producing less methane and waste.
Another method already being used to reduce methane emissions is feeding livestock a diet higher in energy and rich in edible oils, which ferment less than grass or low-quality feed.
Nancy Hirshberg, spokesman for the New Hampshire-based Stonyfield Farm, an organic yogurt producer in which Groupe Danone holds a majority stake, said: "If every US dairy farmer reduced emissions by 12 per cent it would be equal to about half a million cars being taken off the road."
